Putting your money where your Dready is ...

tis the season for giving ...

dready has given much to activism this year, with art for CARE (animal rescue) 2013 campaign, to Central Caribbean Marine Institute, which raised 4200$US on Dready donations for marine research, to local lionfish culling and research groups and finally to the save south sound environmental campaign ...
is important, i think, to put your money where your mouth is.

give love, get love!

sailing on kingston harbour 1973(ish)

a lot of dready art sailboats recently ... one led to the next really ... this is Tacita.
Tacita was built in the UK and sailed across the atlantic first to Cayman and then to Jamaica where she was bought by a Jamaican family ... she later sailed off toward Australia but sank en-route.
kingston harbour, i'm told doesn't look like that anymore and sure, it has changed, I saw it just 2 weeks ago ...
the coastline is more crowded, quarries are gouged out of the hillsides ...
the top 6" of water is the only thing that's alive under that the harbour is septic or a-septic, dirty and poisoned ... but the sky is still lovely and the surface is still a lovely blue-grey.
smoood sailin!

a sense of purple

there's a song by third world called 'sense of purpose'; it's a song i like a lot ... so anyhow, this piece of dready art is called 'sense of purple'.

the shapes below are actually a row of villas in the cayman islands that people call the 'smurf houses'; very cool, almost amorphous (attached) houses, along seven mile beach, whose rooms lack normal flow and where none of the walls seem quite straight. The cones on the roves are actually venturi vents designed to let the hot air rise and be sucked out ... in a heavy rainstorm they act in the opposite manner and it actually rains inside the houses.

To make a long story longer, the client for this odd bit of art, lives in one of these houses and as I drew them I became aware of  the hippie-ishness of them and that began to reflect on the art ... beyond that, when I photographed them the sky in the background was periwinkle, a colour that seemed too weak for the art and became instead a deep purple.

the cosmic nature of the houses led to this idea of an odd dreamlike divide between the sea and the sky and the flowers for stars ...

with your sense of purpose!

tight lines ...

this is a very cool dready ...
there are lots of little elements in it that make it so ... the colors for one; strong, vibrant, different ...
the placement, the names and therefore the cadence of the headings that lead you to the comedy of the piece ... St Tropez, St. Barts, Key West ... Cows, instead of Cowes.
i love the race start in the top cell, love the colors of the hills and the sea and the little strokes of colour around the boats, the helicopter in the sky, the rays of sunlight in the far left ...
the drama os racing in the second cell, the sense of movement of the boat in the third ...
and of course the cows in the fourth; how they're looking out at us as if surprised that we've made our way there as much as we're surprised to be there and not looking at more boats ... this is the touch of dreadyness!
the idea of the boat's logo on the cow was suggested by the person that commissioned the art, a brilliant touch ... sorry i didn't think of it ...
smooth sailin'!

a sense of history in a piece of dready art ...

the catboat, although not always called that (workboat in grenada), can be found all over the caribbean ... a small, single masted wooden sailing vessel usually reminiscent of life boats from ships of days of sail; but they, like most traditional craft, are dying out.
in the cayman islands there's still a very strong tie to the history of the sea; it is a seafaring nation only 30 years separated from that tradition, where men with the title Captain before their name still exist if only in dwindling numbers and the catboat is an integral part of that history, the traditional fishing and turtling vessel; there is a catboat club and a re-growing interest in this craft.
against an orange sky my little catboat sails out with its crew of a dog and a fair wind at its mast ...
arrrrh!

beautiful places that dready has been ...

i've had the great joy of living in some of the most beautiful places that earth has to offer ... i was born into the beauty of jamaica, of kingston's hills, goshen farmland, yallahs pastures, moneague and  bog walk ... away to a school in the malvern hills, flats in mayfair, semi-detacheds in oxford, a ranch in the wilds of western belize; another school on vancouver island, gordon head on the sea, miami's beaches, vancouver itself, central new mexico, the cayman islands ...

and yet the river cottage and area of the farm it is on is one of the most beautiful idyll's of which i've had the pleasure ... sure there are others but this one ranks!

peace and love and tranquility!

dready 1968 alfa romeo GTV with the right kind of alloys ...

is cool ... 80% of the first draft made the client happy ... but he wanted the Alloys/Rims, very indicative of the right rebuilding of this car back to its original, to be correct, so I returned to the project and changed the look of the wheels.

i dunno if i'm really a petrol head but i do love old cars, there's a different aesthetic and this GTV is one of my favorites just drawing it is making my mouth drool!

the time that it takes ...

doing art graphically is at once more difficult than doing it by hand and ... easier - something seemingly quite simple, like the sails in the above (sailboats in the mediterranean), took me about 3 times as long as they would have doing them by hand ...
BUT
and it's a 'big but' on purpose ... once i've done them digitally i never have to do them again; i can use them over and over, i can adjust their size almost instantly, their colour pretty darn quickly; I can use pieces of the art in other art and so the story goes on.
I do paint in the traditional way and draw and sketch; I like the instantaneousness of sketching ... that on any old piece of paper that's handy; the moment ...
but i don't want to be traditional i want to draw dreadys and this is how i do them.

nuff said (and big love)!

characters ...

i first used these two characters riding on a harley davidson (although they'd already evolved from characters in a piece of hand painted art of dancing dreadys) for a pitch. and you'll see them in the post before on a Vespa ...

i fell in like with them from the very first  - i think of the two of them as trustafarians, nouveau hippies even ... it's in the way that (like all good dreadys) they're looking out at you, as if they're spectating you and not the other way around; it's in their compatibility, their shapes ... their shoes!

truth!

Vespafari ...

this is one of my favourite images hands down; these two dready characters have been motoring their way through my art in many fashions and the vespafari (trustafarians on vespa) is just the latest incarnation ...
is a good example of how much action and emotion you can get out of 2 dimensional art and stick figures.
peace and love!

variations on a dready theme ...

its all down to a matter of taste ya know, dis one like dat and dat one likes dis ...
despite the fact that a touch of comedy is really part of the dready art I liked the simplicity of a version of this with just the lionfish, a spliff in his mouth on a tan background, with its hint of japanese watercolour art
that piece had less to do with the sea and comedy I suppose and more to do with the fish itself and the the whimsy was very very subtle.
i loved this project though, the doing the art live and in person at Camana Bay, Cayman Islands, the complexity of doing the fish ... the fact that I wanted it to look like a lionfish but still maintain the simplicity of dready art ...
balance!

love everything!

when i was a yute we had german shepherds ... 'Napoleon Prince of Orange' was big and black, i was small and white; Josephine was his bitch ... they had a son my sista and i called busta; busta belonged to us, but i don't remember what his title was ... anyhow, mus' love dogs!
when it came time for Busta to be put down I had to do it - he couldn't walk anymore and he'd found himself under the shell of an old truck in the works yard of the ranch in belize - my father couldn't face the job.
this isn't an image of german shepherds but it is for a company called 'Must Love Dogs' ... when I was dreamin this up and i literally did just that, I saw the comedy of a very cool great dane and some very uncool yorkies ... i like how the great dane's legs come out of the image ...
so, all this and to say, i love dogs, i live with one called sam right now.
love everything!

collusion to take over the world ... Scimitar sports produced these lovely dready cycling shirts as worn by these real life like people lurking in London waiting for some cyclists (not wearing dready shirts) to pass by on their olympic rides.
the shirt on the left is a redesign of an earlier cycling image that now belongs to then world champion Thor Hushovd of 'cyclist with chicken' ... now there are 3 cyclists ... a brit chasing anitalian and a frenchman. the shirt on the right is based on a 'london dready' early card design.
anyhow, too much talk talk ... they cool!

the muses ...

it's good to have muses ...
this new show at Artccentrix Gallery was inspired by a little muse who loves horses; she's cute and mischievious, sometimes stubborn and difficult and lovely and beautiful and t'ing and t'ing. i like her and she is mine.
I have a little man muse as well ... different and equally lovely
and ... and ... and a big girl muse, woman ... i am hers.
plenty love!

dready polo players entering the field ...

this is the second dready polo image ... note the rider nearest you is carrying her mallet in her left hand ...
since 1962 polo must be played right handed but here she is entering with the stick in her left hand, it seemed correct artistically ... and she is just entering not yet playing, so, ya know, I gonna leave it so.
sweeet!

a new series

i don't play polo (although i have played polo) but my cousins, their fathers before them and my uncles before them all play ... I grew up around the game on weekends in the country.
so, when I wanted to do a series of dreadys based around horses a few polo ones seemed to be the right shot ...
going for goal, seen!

dready re-evolution ...

it's all still dready art but there's this whole new sideline of more evolved characters, done for specific jobs, that still adhere to the principle of the simplicity and whimsy of dreadyness.

i think that even in this you can see all the trademarks of any dready despite the fact that character has 'legs'!
chillaxin!

kite surfer ...

this is going to be very big dready ... 10 foot x 4 foot!

Monday, February 6, 2012

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LGPiXQ2PP8M&feature=youtu.be this, nice people, is a dready tv spot for a cayman car company, Car City ... it's the second ad in a series of three and the first foray of dready into simple animation. simple, cool and comical.
supa star!

surfing series

i been working on 2 groups of art, a surfing and a skiing series; this is #3 in the surfing series. i love to watch surfing and love the idea of surfing ...
as i think I said before if i'd not grown up as a farm bwoy and a cowboy i'd a like to have been a surfer; but shaney don't surf ... dready can though!
surfing's a beautiful art and the sea and sun, tanned skin, board shorts and bikinis, beautiful locations and the smell of coconut oil ...
having done the surfing rasta (which now belongs to Billy Wilmot, jamaican surfer) and the cold water surfer for Caribbean Canvas Company ... i wanted to do a surfer girl; so here she is!
surfin sisterin!

back in the business ...

the very first dready t-shirts came out for Crop Over 2006, august, in Barbados as a promotional t'ing ... a get behind the big truck thing with people wearing the shirt and dancing and t'ing!
that was followed with shirts for sale in Barbados, Grenada, Cayman and soooooooon after, Jamaica all in 2007.
we launched with only our balls and our chat, ya know, cause we had no big money we just kinda went for it to see where it would take us ...
and ...
and see us, we still here!
a few little ups and downs have gotten in the way; the global financial crisis had already been proceeded by earlier declines as people ran out of money in the 2 years before, because or rising costs of food and gas.
but dready be nimble and simply concentrated on original art, prints and PR ... dready evolved and flourished all at the same time blew the original concept out of the water so far and fast that it made my head spin
the original art and the notoriety of his dreadyness flourished ... a whole new vision of dready as art, as a signature style and not just a character bloomed.
but Tshirt sales wilted ... we hadn't sold a tourist related Tshirt in about 2 years till this, this now and here and dready for caribbean canvas company.
caribbean canvas company is a cool idea, driven by the mind of a guy named hugh treadwell; it's a big vision, a quality lifestyle clothing company with the ability to be a regional and then global brand.
we still here bigger and badder than before ...
big up!

what's new ...

2012, newness, positivity ...
this piece is of the National Gallery of Cayman, for the National Gallery of Cayman ... neat trick that don't it!
the stark simplicity of some dreadyness, bold blocks of colour and a little humorous play with the actual architectural drawings.
like!
