the naked truth ...

Red Headed Nude - Limited Edition Print 30x20

i have/had in mind a series of nudes, and below of others; the blue room nude, the little cayman nude (in hammock), which i think's a very cool image, this - Sunday's Nude.

and next maybe a male-female nude ...

somewhere on the pages below is a nude I drew by hand in colored pencil; I used mainly browns and yellows ... i used those same tones here; so whereas in the 'Blue Room' nude her edges and lines and contours and shadows are all black this nude's are all browns.

anyhow, it's cool and sexy and challenging to do these drawings ... very cool. and they help me craft my work ...

lower down, in the post about the cricket art, i talked about playing within the theme of dreadyness - about how you use the dimensionality, the blocks of colour, the simplicity, the whimsy, the use of rasta 'insignia', that are all keystones of dready art and the breaking them down into something else as a play on the art itself ... so you do that and it refreshes your brain and your creativity.

on the road to muro ...

Road To Muro - Limited Edition Print 44x14

on the way to muro, majorca, the fields of wheat were golden and flowers dotted the banks of small roads. the village itself was clean and quiet - we entered it from the north-east through a cleft in rock from the days, I presume, when it was a fortress ... its streets and buildings paved in stone that was hued pink and yellow.

we weren't driving a renault 4 but they were everywhere (and a vw polo is so undreadyficated ...)

it's the essence I'm after ...

cool!

A pink lit kind of summer for dready ...

it must have been a pink lit kind of summer because that colour is filling the images that the holidays inspired ...

i did two versions of this,  'ciao mennagio',  one with dready's Trustafarians below and one, which i kind of like, above.

mennagio is a town on lake como, in italy ...  a classic Fiat 500 fits the scene - it's a cute as hell car; just seeing it makes me smile. pretty central to the lake, where it Y's, mennagio is a lovely town and a ferry terminal for touring the lake; belaggio in the middle and varenna on the far bank ... they filmed the end of casino royal and the opening of quantum of solace there ...

... it wasn't the only pinkness of the summer and not the only car either ...

will see what images come next.

a serious tranquility ...

two things were going on around me; first they ve been advertising 'shark week' on tv like it was going out of style and then closer to home, here in cayman, there's been big chat about shark conservation programmes and the benefits of sharks to the ecosystem and to the tourism product ...

then I saw a very cool image ...

and it made me think about showing a shark, not being aggressive, but contemplative, serious, moving slowly through his ocean and then I decided to build on that subtle simple beauty: a ray of light, a coral fan, a few dready-ficated fish ...

tranquility ... a 'serious' tranquility

you looking' at me ...

Pree Mart - Limited Edition Print 48x14

so, its been a while since i've drawn a completely new, totally traditional dready image; i've drawn some of the trustafarian ones - they have a character all their own - but nothing simply 'dready': in characters, in tone and in style ...

this one is based on two hand sketches that i'd done ...

to 'pree' is to look on someone, usually with a little touch of envy ... 'why yu a pree pan me' ...

but, ya know, sometimes people do things so they can be 'preed' upon ...

and so, in the case of this art you go to pree mart to buy the kind of things that will cause people to look at you but also the characters, in good traditional dready fashion, are all looking out, 'preeing' on you the viewer ... or perhaps you are 'preeing' pon dem

lifestyles of the rich and famous ...

this dready started with the drawing of the figure on the left ... a cool photograph got me doing it and having drawn it i was looking for a setting for him and this began to emerge.

right now i'm calling it 'upper st andrew life' (but it could be 'LA life' or 'miami vice', both of which i also thought about ...)

kingston, jamaica, sits in the parish of st andrew and flows from the harbour, kingston itself, through the liguanea and up into the 7 hills that surround the coastal plain.

anything north and east of halfway tree, where the land starts to rise more quickly,  is considered 'upper st andrew' ... and the more upper you get, usually the wealthier you get. And in the cool mountain air it becomes not just a place but a lifestyle ...

livin' it large ...

skateboarding dready ...

between the ages of 13 and 16, when i was at school in the great white north, stacey and i spent most days on skateboards (or bicycles) ...

you could ride the road from gordon head, down arbutus, to cadboro bay; 3 miles easily, mostly down hill all the way ... only drama is that you'd have to come back up again.

we loved boarding ... we never did this ... but i like the idea of this.

i call it 'the twins: a skateboarding epic'

dready's favorite cottage ...

somewhere in my semi distant past, i danced on the gateposts of this cottage, in the hills south of Montego Bay, to fleetwood mac's 'monday morning' ...

in my memory a storm, rains, were brewing in the distance to the south but maybe that's just my imagination - maybe it was the clouds of 'what you gonna do with your life' ... and so I wanted to kind of build the ominousness into the colour of the background sky while laying the sun down in the foreground.

i've been meaning to draw it for a long time ... i'm happy that i have now.

peace!

the gentle pace of cricket ...

i like listening to cricket on the radio, when the test matches are on, it is one of the most soothing things in the world ...

two of those days of everlasting memory were spent with one grandfather at sabina park and another at some county ground near sevenoaks, kent; the noise of one and the green peace of the other.

cricket's a delightful day well spent, the gentle pace of the overs, the pause for tea, the smell of fresh mowed grass, the quiet movement of the fielders changing with each new bowler ...

dready is of course a cricket player ... but in this case for the need of the art and what i wanted to portray I've moved on to evolved characters and a slightly less two dimensional view -

sometimes it's nice to stretch the boundaries of the art that you're doing without completely leaving the box behind - so the simplicity is there, the large blocks of colour, the rastafication, but we've skewed it a liccle, turned it on its angle and played with it.
