dready art's monsoon bicycle ...

dready 'monsoon bicycle' - 24x24 - limited edition print on canvas

i was looking for inspiration and max said 'how about people under an umbrella' … that sent me on a search of an aesthetic that culminated in what is really an 'evolved' version of the bikeafarians.

it's been interesting 'cause in the past weeks i've been drawing classic and evolved dready's one for one really, and it's cool … they allow me to express my whimsy in different ways while still keeping to that idea of innate simplicity.

the 'original' bikeafarians was inspired by a little ride, a small moment, in little cayman - this one is more about a general vibe in life …

and rainy season is here, the storm clouds brewed up this morning; thunder and lightening and a fresh coolness on the beach …

last week a short downpour and the hot smell of the rain on scorched asphalt was delicious …

i love the tropical rain ...

in Jamaica, in Belize, in Florida, when rainy season came, every afternoon raised clouds and showers but in cayman it's less predictable … we're too small and so we don't really create our own weather systems but we lie at the centre of the movement of weather around the basin, the clash of air from off of the continents and the currents from the gulfs and seas and oceans ... so rain happens!

rain!

these are the days ...

dready art 'these are the days of endless dancing' - 26x14 - limited edition print on canvas

i was drawing the dready below and the whole california cum californication thing started playing round in my head …

the idea of an aging hippie-ish couple, 50 ish, all chill and cool and fit and together … and van morrisson playing on the radio …

is a feeling and maybe a story, yu know … into the mystic …

dready s ... 'cause billy don't surf

dready californication dreamin' - 26x14 - limited edition print on canvas

i've often matched a goat with dready in car images - it's an analogous goat, it tells a story, it indicates the caribbean-ness, the jamaican-ness of the story, it adds whimsy … it's a t'ing.

and so, the title of the art, 'cause i'd left the goat out, on purpose, 'cause billy don't surf …

but i suppose really is about the car …

a couple of reasons brought me to draw the 911, first, a guy i know in california, in san diego's been asking me to draw one; he surfs and he has a porsche ...

and, there's a porsche that stands out in my driving memory, jr and i going down 595, in a porsche he'd bought at auction for a client, fast fast … it was a magnificent fleeing.

… and then there's the 'californication' thing …

sweeet!

dready fiat topolino ...

irie-ness!

I forgot all that I knew of gravity ...

dready art, I forgot all that i knew of gravity - 20x30 - limited edition print on canvas

the quote is a version of a line from a poem by rudy francisco called gravity …

the idea for the image started with a photo of a classic fiat 500 down a side street somewhere in italy; the street was empty, but beautiful, the light, the cobbles, the very silent emptiness …

and i love this car as an aesthetic, i've used it, a fiat 500, before - in a piece called 'ciao mennagio'.

i wanted to put a couple in the scene and i was looking for a late 60's style for them …

just that, two people, walking together … and in that simplicity of togetherness a joy and a lightness to their being …

it wasn't about any history, it wasn't about any personal moment, it was about an aesthetic i had seen and felt and how i wanted to translate that into a dready …

and i like the way they are leaving the scene, his hand already out as if they're coming to see you …

peace an' love!

dready t-shirt ideas

          dready Tshirt test image …

when dready began testing so many years ago, we began testing t-shirt ideas at the same time …

the first dready t shirts were for barbados' crop over festival and followed on with t shirts for ganzee stores in the eastern caribbean

there have been dready t shirt lines in barbados, bvi, cayman, grenada and jamaica; there have been special event dready t shirts; there's been dready t shirt licensing … with caribbean canvas company till they closed in 2014

and through it all dready t shirts and the marketing ideas behind them have been evolving …

the basic tenant still exists, if it can be an art print it can be a t shirt print; now though, the art, and the t shirt image have grown toward a more global market while continuing to have that underlying caribbean vibe ...

the vdub, so very cool, so very whole world, so very caribbean …

dready art imitating dready life ...

dready, and a glass of golden rum - image

i'm playing with a vibe here as i get ready to do a show and it's that mash-up of posters, advertising, simplicity; verbalizing thought that i kinda touched on in a post below on 'juta driver'.

bending the genre between advertising and art, exploring size and colour …

the original idea, the shapes the art was to take, the colours that make up dready art, they were 'designed' and thought about using advertising 'tools' ...

true position!

dready art

dready art Juta Driver - 27x40 - limited edition print on canvas

people often ask me, 'what kind of art do you do?'

it's hard to explain …

it is at once graphic 'fine' art, faux primitive, it is like poster art, in that it uses large blocks of colour and there's that hint of pop art to it, a feeling of the 60's and 70's ...

but in truth it is something all of it's own, 'cause it's a mixture of all those things, with a hint of whimsy and a distinct caribbean-ness thrown in as well …

anyhow, the whole thought of 'poster' art got my brain ticking and i used a mash up to create 'juta driver' … the image at the top.

in jamaica the taxi association is called Juta, they of course don't drive yellow cabs, but i couldn't do the taxi driver mash-up without one.

not a martin scorcese film!

dready s equal opportunity

dready diver girl - 36x13 - limited edition print on canvas

one of the very first dready s drawn was that of the diver, it was one of the first post cards, one of the first tshirts and it was in the very first group show i was part of …

historically, as simple as this dready seems, it s first iteration was an evolution: the dready on which this is based 'diver on blue' was the first dready where the character wasn't looking out of the image at the viewer; one was drawn to the fish's eye instead - it changed how i thought about portraying dreadys and i did think about it and even drew versions where the character was looking outward.

now, there's a female version … and she's every bit as cool.

girl power!
