dready defender ...

                     dready - these small hours ... - 24x24 - limited edition print

land rovers keep cropping up in dreadys because they were such a big part of the landscape of my youth, and still promulgate in the vernacular of my adulthood ...

I have a 90 right now; she's lovely, she's old, but that's kinda my thing; there's a couple of persian carpets lining the floor in the back, the diesel engine makes a delicious noise, the gear box is tough, the ride is hot … it's all idiosyncratically cool.

I used to have a series III, long wheel base, ex mod, canvas top, windows that slid instead of wound; it died 10 years ago, in hurricane ivan, drowned, its every orifice filled with sea water - I could often be seen driving down the road, the canvas sides rolled up, me holding the door open to let cool air inside …

there were land rovers at goshen, geoffrey had one at paddocks, uncle richard and aunty betty had betsy - I drove betsy, a short wheel base series II, to grass piece to cut grass - drove her to kingston and watched cyar dem scatter out of my way when she clattered down the madness of half way tree rd.

my father took chevys to belize; suburbans and blazers and pickup trucks ... but the british army drove land rovers; not for them the soft american rides.

so land rovers have scattered the roads and works yards and junk heaps of my youth and young adulthood; worn and faded, battered, some times even broken, and still running … I have a thing for them.

a t'ing for them.

bless!

dready … it fills itself out as you draw

dready, part of an unfinished thing … 'we sway' - 12x12

i wasn't feeling well; fuzzy and mildly feverish, stuffy head, but I hadn't drawn anything in a week and it was itching me …

I'd wanted to draw a land rover defender 90 …

but I had an idea to create a scene around it; a couple walking away from the landy or to it, hadn't and haven't still decided - but them, I've been drawing them all day …

maybe the back of the land rover would be open … it's all a process, you have a vague idea and it fills itself out as you draw … the shoes, the shadows, the bottle of red stripe beer, they all come to you as you go.

because they're a t'ing, a fashion amongst caribbean peoples and especially jamaicans, the characters are wearing clarks, desert boots …

the desert boots came first really, they started all this; i saw them, mine sitting on the persian rug this morning and i photographed them to use them in a drawing …

and it kinda filled itself out as i drew it ...

love!

dready of tryall golf course

dready s 'tryall, 8th fairway' 5ftx2ft - original (working on)

we spent a hot morning photographing a house called bumpers nest and then trying to find the right view and approaches to it from the rest of tryall …

and this view, this approach, up the 8th fairway was just lovely.

if you know the house is there, at the top of the hill in the background, you can just make it out …

there was no one else out, the day was quiet and hot, and we walked from the 'great house' down the back stairs and on to the fairway past the tee; strolled up to the green and past the tufts of purple sea grass, to the rise behind it near the next tee … we paused here, then took a sharp left and cut back, down some old stone steps, along another fairway with a sweeping view between the trees and the gully … pimento and palms, a cut stone bridgehead spanned by steel … back up to the great house … beautiful.

for the purpose of full disclosure, i took a lot of artistic license … i took out all the other houses from the view, the expanse of empty green and sky to the right is all my doing … the road does not run into the sea and there was no elephant in the rough!

there's a famous dude, named jonathan routh, who painted a lot fo tryall and round hill nearby … he also did a famous book of paintings called 'the secret life of queen victoria' - the elephant, with queen victoria on it, just to the middle left, is a nod to routh.

beautiful!

dready art of tennis …

theo's tennis people, part of an original commission

in honor of wimbledon today i broke out theo's tennis people …

this was one of the first times I tried to get the 'nature' of somebody in a fully evolved dready drawing and I loved the way it came out, the cool quirky-ness of it and the fact that if you knew the people, you'd recognize them immediately.

cool …

dready Inspiration …

     Fiat 500 classic

I spend a lot of time looking for inspiration in stuff and t'ings and taking photographs to work from …

i like old things, things that have been worn and patina-ed, dented and used …

a few years ago i went to an old plantation era stone cottage in jamaica called itopia; miss sally had used the age of the house, it's dented and used and scraped and bruised-ness as part of the aesthetic … broken grout between tiles was left, the kettle was battered and old, where eons of levels of paint had been scraped off the walls it was left as if it were the colour itself …

all of these things were done on purpose, the house's age was its decoration …

i felt instantly at ease in that house that day … it was familiar to me … many happy childhood memories in houses like that; the creak and rattle of old wood floors, the mossy blackness of old stone; ferns growing from the cracks and crevices of its join to another stone, the smell of old soil, of wet vegetations, the cracking paint on shutters …

peace ...
