dready art 'fuck the allegory' - 18x24 - original on canvas
this dready was to be about history, and architectural art and architecture and the 'darjeeling express' … i love that movie, the colours, the scene setting, the train ...
at the centre of this image is a tree house/doll house and a little girl, and the rest of the art is about her; about the house she grew up in, her life, the places she came from, the place she was at, what she does in life and what she likes ...
it's all there, much of it's not stated; it's there in colours, in images, in things added to images ... it's actually a wild array of allegory.
it was a challenging bit of work, required a lot of research and even in its simplicity there's a lot of detail … and it was cool because i lived in the city she was born, we both went to the same school (years and years apart), we both came to cayman as small people and we both ended up here ...

dready 'eeeeeehm and grrrrrrm/mini and mustang' - 40x24 diptych - original commission
there was a thematic thingy thing to this commission, and it had to do with 30's style gangsters and cars and so it ended up as a keystone cops like car chase …
on saturday mornings when i was a yute, i used to watch keystone cops and laurel and hardy and t'ing and t'ing on the television - that and tarzan; used to love tarzan, used to play tarzan … i don't have a tarzan dready (chuh!)
dready 'lambrettas and vespas' - 36x14 - original on canvas
The soft curves of Vespas and Lambrettas, especially classic ones; they're visually appealing, eh ... they exude this quirky coolness that kinda suits dready ...
i think that lotsa guys can see themselves in a well fitted suit, narrow tie, fine leather shoes, many women, in a billowy dress, a scarf in her hair, the worlds coolest pair of sunglasses, slipping down the amalfi coast on one of these ... pick your colour … stopping in to positano for a gelato …
ciao … have you seen the eddie izzard sketch, look it up, nuh, is funny … no really … ciao!
i must go now, my grandmother's on fire!
dready of 'Balomoral' - 34x14 - original on canvas
fishermen with boats out from northern europe and britain were said to have fished the area around nova scotia, labrador and greenland, that was then teaming with fish, and gone ashore to salt their catch, years before columbus was even 'invented' and set sail for the 'new world' ... its rich fishing grounds brought europeans there in search of food to feed blossoming populations back home ... it was home to the Mikmaq 'indians' when europeans first arrived, but seems likely that is was populated for many thousands of years before that.
anyhow, i've never actually been to cape breton nova scotia, but was asked to do this commission of a house there, and the vibe and feeling of the place ... the rabbits, the lobster boats ... the garden and the husband and wife as the gardeners ...
i like gardening, it's a soothing, invigorating pass-time - i was just out, pick axe, shovel, rake in hand digging garden beds, planting crotons and asparagus fern and dis and dat; the grandfather i grew up with, was a great gardener; we were all born of farmers and came to town to become townspeople when i was a small boy ... we still have the farm in our blood and so gardening allows for that.
this dready has a warmth to it that I like ... which probably doesn't happen much in cape breton!

dready ritz carlton 10th anniversary panorama - 44x14 and 11x4 on canvas
10 years doesn't seem like a very long time in the big scheme of thing,s but it's long enough for a place, like the ritz, to become a part of the landscape of life, emotion and memory ...
in the 7 foot long dready cayman panorama called, 'things that exist only in my fading memory', the old holiday inn sits in the spot the ritz would now occupy - it's a piece of art about good memories, about the things that meant something to your youth, helped form you - the ritz makes up a new phase of good memories, something my children will recall when they grow old enough to be sentimental.
the very first show that dready art was in was a group show in the ritz's 'walking gallery' - every 4 months or so, the shows, the art in the gallery revolves, with some anchor artists; dready has had the good fortune to be one of those anchor artists ...
and so for me it was a delight to be asked to do this drawing for 10th anniversary gift.
the ritz is cool - it's an awesome welcoming space; friendly, convivial, open, inclusionary ... full of good food and fun, of interesting nooks and crannies, shops and activities ... bless the memories of the times i've already had there.

this has been the coolest of commissions to do; a lot of stuff and t'ings going on it it that made it fun - and over the years have spent a lot of time at cricket square's brasserie restaurant and the brasserie market place - chateau chooks in the bottom right corner, Jacko's auto which i liked so much, i turned into its own print series ... the palm trees ... ya know, palm trees, pah, not much of thing, but no, truly aesthetically i love them.
there are always these little bits in a dready that you need to look for, things that mean something to the person who has commissioned it ... the blind dog, toffee, in the security car, the cricket game in the middle [because this was cayman's original cricket ground, called partner ground] ... why? because you should see peoples faces when they move through the dready and discover these little elements.
i love what i do.
