dready melody's sky ...

                    dready art's 'Melody's Sky' - 24x24 - image

the simplicity of white snow and blue sky is something that reaaaally appeals to me ... it appeals to the dready sensibility ...

I first saw snow when I was 9 ish, I think; we went on a holiday to canada where an aunt and uncle had moved to from jamaica; the back side of mt. tolmie in victoria bc ...

don't let me mislead you, mt tolmie is a volcanic plug about 400 ft high but it was covered in snow!!!

i've done 3 versions of this ... 'cause ya know every dready is supposed to have some red, yellow and green in it, rasta colours, right! so this guy has a red jacket, the next one the jacket is yellow, next is green ... see what I mean.

peace!

dready ... Suzie Q

                       dready art 'Suzie Q' - 36x12 - image

ricky has a boat called suzie q ...

look, I'm not much of a go to sea go fishin' kinda doood; 'cause i get bored, and when you out at sea you can't just say "well i done with dis hya flex now, mek we go bus' a next move" 'cause you on a boat, on the ocean, there ain't nowhere to go.

but, and i've said this before, down below here somewhere in these posts, I've had some really really nice days on suzie q ... actually one of my favourite fishing days was on her little tender going around the far edge of falmouth harbour catching baby baracudas and putting then them back.

she been in dry dock for the past couple years being redone - she's old, based off a hatteras hull design; built in key west originally and made her way somehow to Jamaica, she needed some refurbishing.

she's close now to being back on the sea and i was looking for a boat to put into a picture.

arrrrrrh!

dready seeing red ...

dready 'vdub kombi' - limited edition archival pigment print # of 99 - 30x20

there are some things that are important to me when i'm drawing a dready ...

first is which characters am i using; am i drawing traditional dreadys or evolved dreadys ... this depends on the story i'm after.

when the drawing starts I want to know what can i leave out ... what do I need to show you so that you can tell what am drawing - I'm after a simplicity, so even an evolved character may have very little going on in them - they have no faces for instance, they have the shape of a face and the tilt of a head but no face ...

In the bigger image, as well, i wanna know what's central to the story and what do I not need to draw ... do I need to draw the hill, the wall, the road, the building, the boat or can i indicate that with a line or two ...

all the while am looking for the whimsy - it's not humour really, but whimsy, the thing that makes you smile: the way someone is standing, the setting of the scene, the inclusion of a goat (or a dog or a chicken or a bird) ...

And too finally, the colours - there's always some red, yellow and green, I have to find the place for that ... it's like the dready signature, always there somewhere ... but more importantly the bold strong background colour - it has to match the key image, it has to match the mood I'm after - it has to kinda say something in itself, and I want it to be strong ... even if it's 'tan' its gotta be a strong tan!!!

easy nuh ...

dready - a surfer's vibe ...

dready 'surfer girl 2/casa love girl' - Limited edition print # of 99 - 24x14

I started out to draw duane paddle surfing off south sound, no really i did ...

but then, see, i been following this photographer, luki o'keefe, on instagarm, who shoots surfers ...

And the whole boho chic surfer style thingy thing ... well, I kinda like that, and ya know, in another life, (in a life where i grew up around the sea instead of around farms) idda mighta been a surfer ...

so, anyhow, following lucrecia led to some random image, of a female surfer, right when I had just drawn Duane's board into the waves ... she was cool, super cool - kinda squatting on the nose, arms loose, in this floral shirt ... But ...

I'd seen some photos of a woman who was all like elegant grace out there on a board, like she was doing a dance of the 1000 veils as she walks out; she was coolness ...

and this, this is my version of that feeling ...

peace ...

dready 'the lost keys'

dready art 'the lost keys' - image

'one thing leads to another' is how the sesame street song used to go, when I was growing up, and that's how this happened ...

we'd photographed some people for a commission, which is how they all start ... it all starts with photographs, research, ideas ...

anyhow, so we'd photographed some people and I was going through the photos looking for the right vibe ...

and there, in a photo, some guys were standing around looking at another guy's phone - and while this was going on, in a completely different context, in the house around me, keys were being lost and talked about ...

so, here I was looking at these guys and it kinda came to me that if you took the man with the phone out of the context they were just looking down ...

you add a few things to that, 2 other characters and a feeling, and you get some dooods looking for the lost keys ...

zeeeeen!

dready art's a woman in white

dready art 'woman in white' - image

i was working on something else, and thought that it needed a woman ... it needed a relationship ...

and so I started to draw her, and maybe i was in an inspired mood, maybe the scene moved me, but she evolved into something so cool to me that I had to give her her own space, and setting her there in her own space, she seemed complete as if she didn't need a 'relationship' didn't need somebody in the picture with her ...

it happens some times

and I was developing this series about music and I found myself thinking of days with music at goshen and my mother ... she doesn't look like my mother, but she feels like it ... the vibe, the essence permeates the picture and every time I look at it that's what i feel like she's doing.

coolness!

dready in france

          dready s 'a wedding in france' - 18x16 - original on paper

last summer four of us set out on a journey from bordeaux to the south of france, by car, to go to a wedding ...

we drove down the valleys of the lot and the garonne ...

at the end of the road was a village that had been 'reconstituted' by a group of like minded artists 40 years ago and house over looking the vast tanned valley ...

and then a mas, an old farmhouse, with rooms to rent and walls that surrounded a series of 'gardens' ...

the 3 days of receptions took place amongst olive groves and gardens of grass and of plane trees. the bride and groom arrived on a scooter down the tree lined drive ...

mirmande is a long way from lloyds pen in yallahs ... it's across a cultural divide, as well as a gap of years; but i like the south of france, it's that same dusty hot dryness with good soil - and anyhow, am not a bwoy of yallahs anymore ... and probably really never was.

mais non!

dready up strawberry hill ...

dready art 'the old baller/strawberry hill hotel' - 44x14 - image

sometimes, after a day spent in the heat and grind of kingston, on some work trip or another, i might try and find my ass up the winding road to the cool seclusion of strawberry hill hotel - is a trip, but every bend, every bump, every steep corner has its worth the minute you sit on that verandah and look out.

a drink in the comfortable bar, a game of backgammon with a friend in the library, a cup of coffee on the deck, food ... i like the place is all i trying to say.

and when evening comes and kingston glitters below, like it's a little piece of heaven ...

there's an nice history to the place, time in good hands, old old roots as a plantation, time as a place for afternoon tea, a retreat for chris blackwell ... gold records on the wall ...

and a vibe, a nice nice vibe.

peace ...
