dready remarques ...

dready catboat - savannah grand - remarque print - 44x18 on canvas

to create a kind of middle ground between dready prints and the high cost of original commissions there are two other ways to buy a dready ...

the first is the remarqued/personalized print, where I try to add little elements of the buyers wants, without really redoing the print ... ususally fairly subtle changes ...

art and sharon are from new jersey, but she'd been born in st vincent and had fond memories which they wanted to add ...

me, i've spent some nice time in st vincent, up on the hill at villa, looking out at bequia ... one of the family that preceded me built a church on canouan ... i have some down island history too yu know.

dready ... turtles

dready art '5 turtles' - limited edition archival pigment print - 30x30"

the history of these islands is told in tales of turtling ...

and not just the island where i live, but those small cays and harbours and sand spits from cuba to nicaragua, and the southern caribbean coast of mexico, cayman, jamaica, belize ... in places with names like miskito cay, pedro bank, corn island, man o' war cay, swan island, isla de las mujeres, tunerief ...

young men would be left on spits of sand hundreds of miles from home ... they'd rebuild last year's huts (if they'd survived the hurricane season) they'd set out water, 'cause there was none to be had other than what they brought with them or what the rain made fall.

and they'd stay there the season and catch turtle and pen them, come hell or high water or hurricane breeze ...

turtle meat was canned in florida, turtle shell made frames for glasses ...

these days are gone ... but some few turtles have survived them along with the stories of the times ...

dready at the wharf house

                       dready s 'man in a canoe' - original on paper - 28x10

i woke up, as i almost always do, at dawn - i was in a new house; oh i'd seen this house before in several incarnations, but had never stayed in it; it's beautiful lovely serene comfortable cool ... old old old cool.

we'd arrived in the dark of night and so i was anxious to see it, the house, the environs, in the light of day ... walk in the dew wet grass with my bare feet, smell the sea, take photos of the old stables, the house, the wharf master's office, the teepee, the beach, the cottages ...

the sun rises slowly, blocked at first by the low hills to the east of mo-bay; light creeps in, it infiltrates rather than surprises; insinuates itself on the trees, the lawn, the dock, the sea ...

soft cool air, people stirring around the house (not the guests; other than the i, they were firmly asleep) a cup of coffee ... and around the point an old man rowing a moss stained canoe, his fishing net in a small pile at the opposite end.

even at this little distance I could see that he was not a young man ...

so when a dude in an old ass canoe comes rowing into your morning light you begin to wonder about where he came from, where was he going to, where had he been ... and from there the story can develope in a thousand ways.

and then he was gone ...

dready ... all the things ... and a dog.

                   dready art - 'a dog's life' - original commission - 36x36 on canvas

the right dog and the right colour that's was the basic nitty gritty of this dready ... i'd like to say I chose the dog, I didn't, the dog was given to me as an idea and I just had to find the right way to present it (and the man talking to it.) the whole idea was made more fun, 'cause the art was a surprise and so we couldn't just ask for photos of the dog ...

dogs lurk around all over the place in dreadys - I grew up with dogs, eh; rex, napoleon, buster, josephine - like all the animals in the art they add a certain little life, an aside to the story you're telling: the goats talk about heritage, chickens about an atmosphere in which history creeps through into modernity, the dogs really about family and love and warmth ...

and i put our two stools in there - one that had been my family's, old old and well travelled through generations and countries, and the other recently bought for our home - cause i needed something for them to sit on and I couldn't find anything suitable.

all these things, the right dog, the right gesture, the right colours ... you spend a lot of thought time on these things. but it's cool cause I love the end result.

is the journey, zeeen ...

dready reaching a certain age

dready art 'milestones' - original commission - 49x17 on canvas

was thinking the other day how you experience the same things in life at different stages ...

how a really ripe cheese, for instance, can be troubling when you're 15, but lovely when you're 50 ... how 6 cheeseburgers and a chocolate shake can disappear in front of a 14 year old and a green salad fill you up at 40.

And it's cool, because of the experiences we have, how the past evolves us, how age changes us physically and time mentally, it truly means that you 'never step into the same river twice' ...

robert was turning 50 and so a snapshot of a that as a moment in his life.
