dready - the art of collaboration ...

dready art 'mas milk' - 36x36 - original commission on canvas

i believe in collaboration - it's part and parcel of working on a commission because the client becomes part of the process ...

but beyond even that, beyond the client, the input of others, others who can see the trees when you're only seeing the forest is never wasted ... the change of a colour, the shift of a perspective, the size of the line in the background that denotes a doorway the addition of names on a paper bag to help tell the story!

all these are part of the image before you that other people added to the process and the end result wouldn't have been as good without it ...

the creative process, at least the beginning of any creative process tends to be a solitary one; you sit at your desk and you draw, or write, or imagine ... you're alone in your head and alone with your tastes, your ideas, your prejudice, your personality and you're trying to imbue both yourself and the reality of other things into whatever it is that you're doing.

the collaboration of another voice, or two, adds the dimension of flinging in contrary ideas into mix, ideas that your prejudice, your bent, may not have brought to the table and that can be a very good thing.

out of many one people ...

one love ...

dready the colours of a country

              dready 'sheeps' - 12x12 - image

along with the puffins below, these 'sheeps' are as much about the colours of the country as the sheep themselves.

pam can tell you that as we travel and we pass rolling hillsides dotted with sheep i can't help but call out 'shoops' or 'sheeps' ...

long ago i was on a ranch in the high plains of new mexico working sheep ... there were a few sheep in belize, and the odd one in jamaica, waiting to be fat enough to roast ...

so I suppose the sheep are reminders of days on the farms i grew up on and around.

but too they're reminders of modern (and frequent) road trips through scotland - and recent journeys to other places - scotland's beautiful, not all of it is the wild stuff of photo-unrealism, so much of it is soft and green and undulating and 'sheepy' ... as well as the wild and gorse-ed and peaked and black rocked and, yes, more 'sheepy'.

we went to iceland recently, and david said, 'drive out along the south coast, you've never seen anything like it.' ... and i hadn't, and it was amazing (and full of sheep).

but it's the ominous skies of places like scotland and iceland; the brooding skies and paleolithic green landscapes.

baaaaaa ...

dready ... puffin ...

                    dready art 'Puffin' - 12x12 - image

when i asked max and pam what they most wanted to see, it was puffins ...

even to see them fly is cute, their little wings working over time to keep them going aloft ... and face to face, on the ground, equally cute.

scotland, iceland, faroe islands ... puffins abound ... north atlantic and the north pacific (although have not seen a north pacific one yet.)

travel tends to inspire you; new 'stuff' gets inside your brain and wants to express itself ...

A recent journey took us to many awesome beautiful things, to many interesting and diverse places from the north atlantic to the edges of the middle east and areas just about smack dab in the middle of the two ... and in all that, two things struck me most, the colours of two countries and the puffins.

cuteness ...
