dready wedded bliss

dready s 'the big fuck-off tree' - 20x11 - original commission on paper

they got married in scotland in a castle against loch ness and on the drive into the grounds was this beautiful tree, they and the tree are not in the picture together really, but I liked the photos of the tree and turns out the bride liked the tree as well ...

I even like the drawing of the tree ...

in the landscape with the tree, right behind where I have placed the couple, is a hole in the foliage that leads to a jetty and the lake ... but, sadly, the best place for them in the picture blocks it, but I wanted you to know that it was there.

I've been to scotland several times, but never to loch ness - the first time I went to scotland I was about 10 and went with a boy from boarding school, on an 'exeat', to where his father lived in edinburgh; he was an officer in the queens scottish guard, stationed at holyrood palace/house ... he didn't live in it, but in a house below it, a nice house in my memory although I have no specific images of it, except the view, through the front window, across a park at arthur's seat ... i feel we spent a nice time, cold and grey though, and we climbed arthur's seat,

and i remember the black stone ... it was very different from the little of england I knew and very different from jamaica ... I wasn't in england very long and never went back there for 20 something years, no reason to go ... and I never went back to scotland till 37 years later and now I've been 12 times.

it's nice, i like scotland it has a nordic vibe and a wildly beautiful landscape ...

och aye to rass ...

dready art for a family

dready art's 'blue dog and no no' - 66x24inches - original commission on canvas

when i'm doing one of these dready 'elevations' i spend a lot of time, naturally, thinking about how best to show the building or at least the character of the house ... it was the side garden of this house that had the coolest views, some really nice trees, a good sampling of the house itself and was probably a space that the children and family spent a lot of time in, it was a nice space.

so although it is, in terms of the house, the simplest view of the building it speaks to all the house has to offer.

in the end we decided to not show the family but to show hints of the kids and so their favourite toys make an appearance, hence the name ...

as my cousins say

dready miami vice-ish

                      dready 'miami vice-ish' - 44x14 - image

As a tiny yute i had a love for cheap cheap captain's hats from off the bottom shelf in (walgreens), somewhere off biscayne ... i used to look forward to the new one each trip to miami when we went shopping for things, like cheap captains hats(!!!), you couldn't get at home ... days of chocolate malts and club sandwiches, no lettuce.

(though truly the chocolate malts at oxford pharmacy were better) ...

grandpas tailor was on flagler, dad's tractor parts were down off of sunset ...

the big man me still don't tek no lettuce in his BLT ...

then i went to college in south florida and clowned and roamed with yardies (and trinis and guaynese and surinamese and bajans), from palm beach to key west, on and off for 'bout 10 years. I would never call them the best years of my life, but spent some cool cool times of life there ... Miami vice years, eh ... and besides who wouldn't want a ferrari daytona ...

coming in the air tonight ...

dready ... the right donkey

dready 'donkey' -18x12 - limited edition HD archival pigment print

every year (so far!) I draw a christmas card(s) ... and they're free to use ...

as ideas were looking for life in my head, i saw this pic of a whimsically carved nativity scene and thought that it had just the vibe I wanted to draw - just the dude (whom I presume was joseph) and the donkey ... 'cept the donkey was looking the wrong way ...

so i went in search of the right donkey ... i already had the sheep and the cow ... the right donkey though proved an anathema to the original thought; it was just too damn cute to be cluttered up with a nativity and a joseph in a bad hat ...

and so i ended up with 'im all ears' ... and and and a pic of a very cool and cute donkey.

seasons greetings ...

dready art FJ40

dready FJ40 Landcruiser - 24x24 - Limited edition HD archival pigment print

I used to really like to read wilbur smith's novels when i was young; they were set in africa, and full of adventure - between him and clive cussler and louis l'amour i managed to read my way through my teens and maybe nudging into my 20's ...

once reading an interview with wilbur smith, he said, essentially, 'people think that the land rover conquered africa, but it didn't, it was the toyota landcruiser ... and the peugot 505 estate wagon ...'

I drive a land rover but only because I don't drive an FJ40 - they are both such incredibly cool looking, simple and utilitarian vehicles ... and if I could have both, bwoy, i would ...

so, i'd been planning to draw one ... mostly because in my close family there are land rover people and there are landcruiser people and sometimes a little cross-over in between and there's always chatter about which is whose ... and then a guy named blair wanted me to draw one and then i saw a pic of one on a beach in sri lanka that was cool, and then in the bush in costa rica - there used to be tons of them in latin america - I just kept seeing photos of them all over the place ...

so voila ...

and bless up ...

dready - adding a dog ...

dready art 'the last red stripe - 18x18 - limited edition archival pigment print

adding an animal to the dreadys always seems to strike a chord with people, but it also helps to add whimsy and to balance space ...

the placement of the goat in the back seat of a car is only partially about humour and about relating a 'story' of identity, it also gives the viewer something to look for, makes them part of the dready - they end up wondering what they'll find: the goat, the chicken, a dog ... more than one; where's the red yellow and green symbol ...

an 'aunt' of the family ... another side of the family, one by marriage, so not my aunt, their aunt - long story eh! - used to put a lizard in her art and we all used to try and find the lizard every time we saw one of her paintings; it was a thing and made you the viewer part of the art ... made you like the art even more.

besides that I like animals ... well cats, am kinda meh about cats, and pet fish, birds, reptiles, double double meh with knobs on ...

okay, well, so I like dogs!

well, and I like goats and sheep and donkeys and horses and cows and chickens ...

anyhow, nuff said ...

peace ... and love

dready looking through the window of the tate

dready art - 'one blackfriars through the window of the tate' - original image

a friend said 'you have to go up to the members lounge and look at the view' ...

you know how they say 'membership has its privileges', well lemme tell you, the view was pretty damn cool ...

And, and, and by joining we got to jump the queue and see the tate show that was 'sold out'...

you know, despite the fact that you could call me an 'artist', i can't say that am drawn to galleries, museums yes; i like the bits of history and knowledge - but sometimes, gallery shows strike you, you see a theme or an artist that moves you and you want to go check it out.

that said have a had a few random gallery moments that were coolness ...

there was more to this image than the view, mind you; some people I knew were the lead designers for 1 Blackfriars, the building with the big red rectangle on it, and i wanted to see the view of it from there.

seeeeen ...
