dready art - just breathe

                         dready 'just breathe' - image

several of the last few dreadys have been not about colour but about a lack of colour ... they're not the first ones that have done that way ... but I just felt like simplifying them even further.

and it's unfair to say the 'lack of colour', 'cause there's plenty going on eh, just took the background colours out and left it simple simple.

it's something that am always striving for is to find a way to tell a story with as little as possible - here the woman is sunning by the pool; the pool just hinted by a pair of lines and a squiggle of blue ...

easy nuh supah ...

dready s 'gyal abroad'

gyal abroad - internet avatar image - remarque

a big yute, that I know, lives in toronto ... another island bwoy gone away to cold freezing up his skin.

he wrote one day from the great white north and asked me if I'd draw an avatar for his wife, who was doing a blog called 'gyal abroad' ... how could I resist the idea of sending them some warmth and colour back into life and so voila ...

toronto is full of jamaicans, eh, lots of 'aunties' and 'uncles' headed that way to survive during the great exodus from yard in the 70's ... was just looking at some pics that someone posted of parties in the 80's and the familiar faces ...

I used to pass through in a rush on my way to school on the other side of the canadian wilderness in BC - trying hard to avoid stopping; but nowadays my daughter goes to school in ontario and so find myself spending more time in and out of toronto than i ever have before.

downtown toronto is a very cool city; vibrant, interesting, eclectic - but truth is that the vibrance dissipates very very quickly the minute you hit that 401(along with one's patience) - and so i enjoy the visits now, the walks, the food, the city ... but i'd still rather be visiting her in BC, 'cause that's a damn pretty place as well as being vibrant and interesting and eclectic ...

gyal gone broad ...

dready art 'josiah's beach' - 50x20 - original triptych on canvas

at the end of last year, 2017, two back to back hurricanes Irma and Maria, mashed up the BVI and several other countries in their path;

I'd just taken this commission a few weeks before irma ...

in the aftermath it kinda held extra poignancy for the couple and they were anxious to see it done ... theirs wasn't a life completely lost as they still live there, but a life completely changed, and this was, perhaps to be a reminder of things that 'used to were'.

having lived through several hurricanes and one major, personally devastating one (and one devastating but not personally) I know the sensation of what someone called 'the new normal' ...

the choice to make this a triptych came slowly as I was drawing it; it started with the want for more sky ... and then the size of the end image started to evolve, it started to get bigger and bigger.

first it was just a diptych with the extra sky and then I had an urge to cut it and make it 3 ...

bless ...
