dready art defender

dready art 'the south coast journey' - 30x30 - HD archival pigment print

the land rover is awaiting back-ordered parts and so have been thinking about it ...

and in truth the journey we took yesterday was a journey in another car, not because the land rover can't drive, but because we're not with it, but it's obviously with us, with me anyhow ...

we passed through the town where my paternal grandmother was born and then turned left and down; we went through towns like junction and southfield ... the land was dry and the sky blue ...

we turned left again and down to a spot where the world fell steeply away to the sea ...

there were goats (and little kittens) and dry brown grass and lignum vitae trees and logwood ... the wispy sere smell of sunbaked dryness ...

and then this black sand beach ...

man's (and woman's) journey ...

dready ... back to the scene of the crime

coach house, good hope, trelawny, jamaica

i've spent a lot of time at good hope over the years, is an amazing place; lovely beautiful, tranquil, verdant, vibezy ...

who wouldn't want to try and draw this, eh ... so had this solo show in jamaica and drew it, hung it ... love it.

dready art 'the coach house' - 20x30 - limited edition archival pigment print

when i drew this, the coach house was a stand alone building, full of bedrooms, the grille door in teh middle held a long table, some scattered chairs; they used it as a dorm for kids camps, somebody lived in one of the bedroooms, it had a small kitchen to the back ... now its been refurbished, beautifully, and out back a disappearing edge pool,  a stand alone modern kitchen dining building that runs perpendicular, connected to the old house by a covered breezeway so as not to interfere with its lovely georgian-ness ... all creating a 6 bedroom holiday villa ... i wanna stay there.

yesterday we walked from down bottom, by the business end of things, at the end of the day - I'd hoped we would catch the sunset from up top, but it was a cloudy evening; the light though, fucking lovely -  up the hill round the back of the great house, back down through the gardens and down all the way to the river ... as we were leaving the great house area, i stopped just as the drive ran down the hill, turned and snapped a pic back up the hill of the coach house.

dready and a diving turtle ...

dready art 'turtle diving' - 24x24 - image

and in the beginning there is 'canvas' and lo it is blank and in need of some stuff and things upon it ...

and you start to imagine what that could be and how it would look and you start to draw it ...

and sometimes you get lucky, eh; sometimes you end up drawing something that manages to stand alone, to stand out from the surroundings ... i say lucky 'cause it doesn't always happen.

the turtle wasn't originally diving, but I see him like that, see him headed down through the layers of water to the coolness below ...

we were swimming last week, wading really, and because a spring fed into the sea nearby, you could feel the changing water, layers of cool and hot and warm and mingled ...

cool-ness ...

dready in the sea grass bed

dready art 'jack/permit fish' - 24x24 - limited edition archival pigment print

the sea in south sound, the sound really, is shallow shallow and full of turtle grass out to about 100 feet off the beach, and then it gets a little deeper and sand and coral and spots of sea grass mix, before it dips down, just taller than a tall human for a short bit before coming up again to shallow by the reef ...

when the tide is low the grass is almost high and dry ...

amongst the seagrass, the turtle grass, are conch and lobster and permit and jack and bonefish and starfish and baby sharks ... it's like a nursery of marine stuffs and t'ings and in the evenings the bigger fish move through shallows feeding, their little fins breaking the surface and their scurry evident in splashes and waves and eddies of action.

i like the 'watercolour' wash look of this dready ...

people have been asking me if I had any other fish to go with the lionfish dready and now, I do ...

and probably some bookmarks too ...

fry fish and festival!

dready art ... turtle

dready 'Turtle' - 24x24 - limited edition HD archival pigment print

the days of turtlers and turtling are gone but turtles still seem to loom large in the imagination of swimmers in the sea and islanders alike.

everywhere I turn these days on social media i see a turtle encounter - they're peaceful gentle swimmers, not aggressive ... they're a little like puffins in the awkward but cute way in which they move ...

I drew this turtle and the lines of shadow from the ripples on the sea floor over which he was swimming and then the idea of light shining across his back came to me ...

further down these pages are 5 turtles swimming together across a large space of blue, but I felt a lone turtle, solitary was the right shot too ...

dready soaking for the sea

soak for the sanctuary - 2018 - ocho rios jamaica

"all sea is sea ... and the ocean has the manners of an ocean" Greek epigram ...

the sea surrounds us, its mechanisms help give us our climate, it's plankton blooms oxygenate the atmosphere - it feeds us food and gives us rain ...

it covers 70% of our planet and yet because it's surface hides our torment of it, we would kill it because we can't see it suffering.

'soak for the sanctuary' a fund raising event in Ocho Rios ... it was a day of bring your own food, your own drink, your own swimsuits and a donation to the charity ... but the charity doesn't have to end with the sunset, dready donates to the sanctuary, find it, find something like it, donate, give time, give thanks, give love ...

live good ...
