dready succession

dready 'south sound sunset' - image

i was working on some art to replace existing dreadys as they sold-out - we are halfway through selling out some of the print series - and this was one of the successor art that I was working on.

you don't directly see the sunset or sunrise from south sound, but the light changes, eh - ending in a delicious purple hue at dusk ...

at dawn the early light is a soft soft orange which quickly clears to a crisp white blue ... the temperature and the light rise quickly around here ...

dready and the dogs ...

dready art - 'the contemplation of relief' - 12x18 - limited edition prints

people love their dogs ...

that I have come to learn from the commissions that I get ...

I mean, please don't get me wrong, am sure there are people who love cats and yes I do get requests for cats but not as many or with the same cool vibe of love love love that I get from people who want to include their dogs ... even dogs that have died.

when i drew this and posted it I called it 'fox terrier and friends' and then 'quince' sent a message and so it's now called 'the contemplation of relief' ... which I think is much better

dready alldog christmas

dready art 'sleigh's for bitches' - alldog ranch christmas card

i met the owner of alldog ranch in that modern way, over the internet ...

we were chatting because he was staying on a farm in jamaica where i spend a lot of time and we had that in common; I was also unbeknownst to both of us at the time I was also talking to his brother-in-law ...

the people who own the farm had met him in a similarly out of the way kinda way, a chance moment in talking about schools that they'd both known ...

these intersecting paths through which we travel through life ...

dready art surfer man ...

dready art 'surfer man' - 34x16 - limited edition HD archival pigment print

i was going over some dreadys earlier this week, and there was one of the josiah's beach surf spot in BVI that had done for a couple whose lives were upended when hurricane irma 'mash up' the islands ...

she s a surfer and they wanted a liccle memory of days ...

and it kinda got me thinking ... I spent a great day down by Jamnesia surf camp, just outside of yallahs, in Jamaica, a few years back and it made me wonder, 'cause I think had we stayed in Jamaica grandpa would have kept the little farm at yallahs, which ended at the surf beach near white horses I might have joined uncle C out there, 'cause he used to surf, and learnt ...

but you never know where roads take you.

derady art vespa rider

                          dready 'it's actually a lambretta' - 25x16inch - HD Archival pigment print

it's actually a lambretta ... but who's counting!

normally dready has a vibe that is almost completely its own ... you see things that are similar, you can find influences, but nothing falls into exactly the same mould - this whimsical mash-up of pop and poster art with a west indian attitude thrown in for good measure ...

but this dready really does smack of a robert mcginnis, and I like robert mcginnis ...

but, also a thought crossed my mind after listening to a talk at the national gallery last night about a man going away in order to break the chains placed on his mind and to truly transcend and become what he could become ...

we are no longer islands lost at the end of some banana boat trip back in time, and so both our visions of ourselves and and and our actualities have evolved so that we can be west indians and dressed in italian cut suits; we can go to kingston, jamaica, and find high quality brie cheese and a cabernet from  india, and at the same time a bun with tinned cheese and a red stripe, and enjoy these dualities of self expression, that experience allows us to imagine, without sacrifices our basic identity.

dreadys city of brotherly love

dready 'philadelphia family' - 42x17 - original commission on plexiglass

who wouldn't like a city whose motto is 'the city of brotherly love' ...

a family came to me with the idea of showing their house and the kids' school and the children within the city ...

I had just done some art for a company based in philadelphia and the marketing director talked about their view from the showroom on the 30 something floor - I had never been ....

and using the city skyline allowed us to have a backdrop from which we'd pluck the two important buildings out and into the foreground.

And and and, the two rivers really delineate philadelphia, so how would I be able to fit the rivers into the idea ...

in the end, something different, eh ... and I challenge you to find the red, yellow and green colours, side by side, that find their way into every dready ...

peace and ...

dready telling a story in a historical context

dready 'in a historical context' - 50x40" - original commission on plexiglass

how to tell a corporate story within the historical context of themselves and the place that they were headquartered ...

it had to say something about the company itself and how it worked ... and at the same time say something 'definitively descriptive' of the place where we all are.

we came up with the basic tenets that were housed in the company's ethos: historical context . the environment . societal impact . economics . planning . innovation . collaboration . consultation . problem solving

and then thought about how those ideas would be represented via something visual that was 'of the island'.

marine heritage is a big part of the cayman identity, boat building, boat captainsy, fishing, turtling; so I went with the idea of the building and sailing of a catboat because it represented all those things that were part of the ethos.

I had seen this framed photo of the plan for building a boat and was fascinated by how the plan was laid out with the bow and portside views overlaid with each other so you could see where a board started and how it ran down the length of the boat ... and how those were labeled on the plan ...

and like that plan the art overlays all the ideas of the planning and building of a catboat into one image as well as overlaying the ideas of historical context through problem solving via economics and innovation ...

the thing is that a lot of dready is really 'cool fluff', none of it is without thought, the simplicity hides a lot going on in my mind ... but this, this isn't fluff, this is a piece of coolness.

dready sundays by the pool

dready 'the back yard' - 52x17 - original commission on canvas

a snap shot of the times of the world of a family and their lives ... sunday afternoons by the pool ...
and this discussion about what angle of the house they liked versus what angle of the house they used ...

dready versions

                        dready 'roy's retirement' version 1 - 40x14 - original commission

part of the process of a commission is the back and forth between the client to get the idea just right.

this was, is the first draft of an idea about retirement ... it is not how the story ends, but I like this
chapter ...

                       dready 'roy's retirement' version 3 final art - 40x14 - original commission

and then some back and forth happens and you arrive at version 3, the final art ... the basic ideas stay but the backgrounds, the stories kinda evolve.

i've never thought of my own 'retirement' in the traditional sense, and i think that most people don't any more, they think of it as shift from doing what they've done for a long time to doing something else with a short adjustment break in between ... i think of myself as being in a curve that is changing and evolving and so without need of finality; besides, art is not lifting bags of feed grain or digging holes and so as long as the mind is good and people find what you do interesting then there's no need to stop ...

dready moke lifestyle

dready art 'moke lifestyle' - 4x6in - image for advertising

i think that i said all i could say about mokes somewhere below in the blog when we took one out for the day ... the commission to draw a moke for avis cayman already came along with the whole idea of lifestyle back in the late 60's and early 70's when cico-avis first brought mini mokes to cayman ...

but there was a long in between and now although they harken back to a brigitte bardot vibe, we're in a whole new world and so we tried to do a modern take on that whole vibe ...

dready riding down the road

dready art - palm heights ride - image

there was a time when south church street between town and walkers road was more lush, it's building up rapidly now ... progress happens along with nostalgia, eh ... the old making way for the new ...

and out in front of the old seaview hotel a line of cocount trees used to shade the road and I saw a photo of a woman riding along, right there and because of the colour of the old photo, warm and deep in greens and blues,  I began thinking of it on a rainy day, the petrichor smell heavy in the suddenly cool air, a woman cycling from town in a pretty dress ...

and then I was driving down palm heights drive and it still has that vibe that south church street used to have, that feeling of older-ness and of greenery creeping out onto and over the road and so thought that it would be better as palm heights ride, because it's not that I care that much about the nostalgia of it, but I think that memory and moments are important ...

dready chill nuh winston

dready art - 'saturday night lime' - image

people sometimes ask me where inspiration comes from ...

two things set me off on this dready - and let me just stop here and say I love this dready - a hand gesture by a famous photographer, and the way a man was sitting in a chair set me off, and I combined the ideas together and added the usual dready elements of an animal, and in this case a red stripe beer.

the hand gesture - I talk with my hands but it's more than that a gesture, a way of standing, takes the thing you're drawing and gives it life and vibes, lifts it out of the mundane it also gives you a story to build around ... so the gesture led to the look, led to the dog and its look, led to the vibe ...

the way a man was sitting - I am always fascinated by the way some men can get their crossed leg over and all the way against the leg that's on the ground ... it's a very elegant way of being able to sit and something I can't do ...

and all the while I was thinking about last night, we'd planned to go west bay fish fry and sit on the wall by the beach at boggy sands and eat and have a few drinks ... justin had brought a cooler cause fish fry doesn't have a liquor license ...

justin can sit that way ...

but the heavy all day rain had closed fish fry early, and so we went elsewhere, and for a moment at least sat on the wall there as well ... but I still was feeling the vibe of the wall by the sea, and the way the sky had been at the end of the day ...

chillin ...

dready golfer

dready art - 'waiting on the foursome in front' - image

it was the chicken and the egg that reminded me of a golf ball ... and so I had this idea of the two white 'balls' at either end of a dready image ... and the whimsy that might contain.

it's almost as if the dude's looking up for the green, thinking about his shot, waiting to make it, waiting on the foursome in front to clear the green.

I am personally ambivalent about golf (although a nice day on a nice course is actually pleasant, especially without the golf!) but I do love a dready with a chicken!

zen-ity!

dready tennis anyone

dready art 'the half moon tennis crew' - 18x24 - limited edition HD archival pigment print

it's a vibe more than an actuality ...

nick plays in a tennis group - like his dad he has an affinity for sports, he's pretty good at them all ...

he and his crew of 'jamaican al pacinos' they have a tournament and tables and shit ... they play some serious tennis-ing and they play it at half moon, and they play it at the lagoons ...

the court at 'half moon' is nestled amongst trees at the side of the road up to spring farm, the housing development above the golf course at half moon, ... nestled is a good word for it, like a clearing in the woods ...

i don't play enough tennis anymore, just sayin' ...

dready art's suite life ...

dready, 'the suite life' - 48x16 - original commission

the Ritz-Carlton grand cayman has a very very suitey suite at the top of the south tower residences - it's called seven south ...

and I got the enviable job of drawing the view into a dready for them to use in marketing ...

lemme just say this, the view is amazing; I mean the suite is lovely; big, cool, interesting, spacious, luxurious but the view, the view finishes the job.

we're very fortunate in cayman, the outward views, the blue caribbean sea upon which sits this verdant isle is pretty damn amazing-lovely ...

some people have drastic mountains, some wide sandy deserts but here, here he hath founded it upon the seas ...

"verdant island, set
In blue Caribbean sea,
I'm coming, coming very soon,
O beauteous isle, to thee.
Although I've wandered far,
My heart enshrines thee yet.
Homeland! Fair Cayman Isle
I cannot thee forget"

dready with love

dready art as part of lot #18 of the JLBAr ranch package.

I'd sent art to a friend who had just moved to texas to work on the JLBar ranch and the art happened to arrive just when he was meeting about being involved in the sonoma county vintners auction to benefit children who were in need after the sonoma county fires they asked if dready would join in this package ...

people think of charity auctions as profile but in truth they're not really, people are focused on other things, they're not focused on the items; they bid for fun, they bid because they're interested in the cause ...

and charitable giving? there's little love in it ...

and so you don't do these things for kudos or visibility you do them for other reasons; for love mostly, or a sense of some duty to things - dready gives because of personal connection to projects that are worthwhile ... it's not random, it's focused on people we care about doing things we care about: close to home.

dready donates from prints sold to: White River Fish Sanctuary, Force Blue (marine and veterans charity), st baldricks childrens cancer,  hanover (childrens eductaional) charities, and others ...

dready - the beach walk

dready art 'the beach walk' - image

we used to walk the dogs down the beach every day; but the truth is that as romantic as it sounds, a beach walk with the dog is a pain - 'cause when you come home you've got to wash the beast and the beast don't like to be washed ...

when dogs dry from a sea bath, if you haven't washed them, they smell like rotten eggs ... and the sand, the sand if you don't wash it off gets everywhere ... everywhere ...

and so now that we live across from the beach and not on it, we can walk the shaded lane with its mixture of the old and the new, quaint and cool, and just look at the sea through gaps in the houses and foliage, see it in full across empty plots, walk down the access paths to the very edge; we show the dog the sand and the sea, we get the romance of the cottage lane and the sea view and walk on satisfied that when we get home the dog is walked and we don't have to wash it!

the dog wants the beach and the sea, she wants to swim and cavort and roll and tumble ... when we pass the access she likes to tug left or right depending on our direction of travel, she wants in ... if only she knew how to operate the hose and could bathe herself!

truth ...

dready - things you don't know

dready art 'kneeling in the bath' - image

I started drawing this as a single character, the blonde, standing, no dog, no bath, no room, no window ...

then all of a sudden the character was standing in a bath ... i liked the idea better, it was like she was caught unawares and the bath suited the scene ...

then the towel was in her hand and she was half covering herself, and then it wasn't it was on the bath and another on the chair and a red stripe ...

then there was someone else in the bath too ... and soon the room filled itself ...

and then the dog arrived ...

and then she knelt as if she was about to stand and I liked it best ...

change is good

dready on miami beach

dready art 'giorgos' dream' - 39x16 - original commission on canvas

when were in college south beach was still all retirees and biker bars, Fisher Island hadn't been redeveloped, there was little or nothing south of Joe's Stone crab and it was all a little seedy ...

we used to go down the bottom end of the beach to south pointe; it was a very quiet bit of beach, all the residential stuff was a couple blocks further north, the old dog track where south pointe park now is had long since closed and so nobody was down there and it was a not very legally nude and topless beach ...

even the lifeguard stand was empty ...

you can still see a bit of the old vibe of the beach in the movie 'scarface' (1983) ... and then with Miami Vice heating up TV screens by the end of the 80's the strip was turning into something very very cool ... european style coffee and a copy of the international herald tribune at the news cafe, man ... the Marlin hotel in the early 90's when Chris Blackwell owned it, yes baby ...

the vibe began to change, of course, as more and more people discovered it, still cool mind you; Madonna roller blading by and saying hi as you parked the car ... 'man, that was madonna just said hi to you' 'never was' 'yeah' 'wow ... where'd she go?'

but it was getting crowded and so, it was back to the quiet cool of coconut grove, which we'd never really left, for us ... even Madonna retreated to her home in coconut grove.

so when a family asked me to do a dready of their young son with a miami vibe, and his mini mini! all these things came to mind and I could just imagine giorgos imagining himself rolling down south beach, top down in his cooper s ...

cool-ness ...

dready ... new additions

dready 'beach day' - 24x24 - original remarque on canvas

the original version of this dready 'paddle boarder over and under' is just the female character - but it's cool; the whole over and under thing is cool, and so am often asked to add to it, to personalise it ...

enjoyable family time, peaceful alone time and loving, calm couples time are all important aspects of a family dynamic - quality time spent in each of those pursuits for all members of the group ...

dready - anything for a glass of wine

dready the wine ride - image for T shirts

some peoples in canada were/are having a wine ride - that is they're riding through wine country in the niagra area of ontario ... and i presume also because they'll be drinking wine ...

i drink wine, not much of it to be honest, but I like it ... but i don't think i really know anything about wine at all; I mean you think you know a little about wine until you sit down at a table (at a wedding say) with several french peoples and they start to talk about wine far more specifically than you ever thought possible ...

and not in an exaggerated or pompous way, just as if you were german and talked about the various beers you liked and why, this one is hoppy, that one is heavy etc ... it's not pretentious wine-ing, just practiced, knowing what chateaus and what cru's they liked as well as what varietals  ...

i could drink a cold cold red stripe right now mind you 'cause de time dem hot ...

dready - the grass is green

                     my feet (italy 2019)

all i can say to you is italian grass isn't any greener than grass 'a yard' but it's nice to walk on someone else's grass, to feel it under your feet cool and spongey, to see the garden, to smell it ... this garden had water running through it from all directions, it was lush and fertile, it was old and well grown-in, it had 'nooks'; you climbed a big hill behind the house and beyond the hill down again to a little valley where a brook babbled and fed water back to the the manicured world on the other side of the hill ... and the grass was green green.

new age t'ings have plenty reference to grounding and the connection between the body and the earth, I don't know 'bout that but i was born in bare feet and spent a good many years in that state and i still like to be shoeless, some times i find it hard to leave the house in shoes ... i remember the story of a cayman bwoy, a story his parents told me, going away to school from home, young still, but there was no big kids school yet built and so he was just 9, and it was the first time he had to wear shoes, and how he found it strange ...

but, it's the green i'm interested in most of all ...

dready and the pontiac parisienne

dready art 'billys endless summer' - 36x13 - image

I was looking for a vehicle to do a thing for some people from a place - the right car, when a road trip we had taken, on a visit to canada, when I was a yute - from victoria bc to the calgary stampede came to mind - there were  10 of us, I think, 4 adults and 6 kids ... there was a camper in the bed of a pickup truck and a safari wagon with the boot made up as one large bed: memories fade, eh, and I was young young, 7 or 8, maybe, but i guess the adults slept in hotels/motels/holidayinns while we kids fended for ourselves in the 'rough'.

the calgary stampede was cool ...

when we first, as kids, arrived in belize, a country where there were no paved roads outside of the big towns - and even then I think more as a way of keeping down dust rather than as a nod to modernity - I was surprised to see that the roads weren't filled with pickup trucks and 4x4 s, sure there were some, but the majority of cars were ford sedans and station wagons ... sure there was the odd chevy, but this was a country of old fords and it was a mercury station wagon that met us and took us 2/3rds of the way across the country to the blancaneaux lodge in the mountain pine ridge, via the ranch at mile 5 ...

'nothing lasts forever but old fords and natural stone' ...

I think that the Parisienne was an only in canada 'model' name but certainly the 'safaris' were everywhere in gm/chevy/buick/oldsmobile/pontiac brands ... and they're cool in their kitch-ness, their 70's-ness, and big and suit the surfer scene ... i don't even remember what kinda car we went to calgary in and why i didn't chose a mercury marquis as the car of choice 'cause jah know I sat in enough of them ... maybe the shape of the wood sides!

give good wood!

dready talk talk ...

dready talking at closing night of biennial (photo by Chris Mann)

the table behind me is not mine! there were three of us talking that night; John Bird, whose table it is, Pascal Prenix and I ...

I had had no idea about what I was going to say until John made his talk before me and since his was about where he'd begun and the process of then and now, I just did the same show, different story ...

to my right, fortunately, is moko jumbies, the dready that is in the biennial ... and i spoke about the difference between stick figure dreadys and something more 'realised' like Moko Jumbies ... and how both are the same voice in different languages.

the first print version of this is really one of my favourite dreadys; it started with a photo of a fiat 500 in an alleyway in naples, which was well cool...

as time went by people, also liking it, asked me to recreate it in one way or another - I once added a oaxaca license plate to the fiat ... in this one I have added a lambretta and changed the faces ...

every iteration of it is cool ... I now know that I want to print a big version of it like 32 x 48 or something ...

dready s mother ...

               dready 'vancouver skyline' - 60x18 - image

I pulled this vancouver skyline out of another dready that I had done a few years ago, for a company in vancouver, because it really is so damn pretty ...

am so in love with colour of the sky ... ooooooooooooh!

i thought of it today because I was signing the dready below in the blog feed called 'family van' and because i was talking to my mother on the phone.

see, 'cause my mother migrated to vancouver from jamaica to follow my sister and myself, who had moved to bc for school; but by the time she had moved i was just about done with school and jumping ship to run away south and get back closer to home ...

so, way too much information but but but am still in love with the sky!

and and and i am working on a philadelphia skyline for someone and am trying to find the right vibe for it ... and other skylines help

good night!

in the very early 70's the mini moke was the rental car of choice in cayman ... they were so cool in places like st tropez and st barths that brigitte bardot drove one ...

and then it wasn't here in cayman any more, outlawed ... but in other places it continued to be cool

and, now, it's back again, reborn as just the Moke ... and so we took one out, on behalf of Avis and went looking for the early 70's!

dready still doing the same stick

dready art 'Family 'Van'' - 36x12 - original commission on canvas

the name is a play on words because this family is from, ya know, vancouver ...

so what's cool about this, for me, is that am still getting to do the dready stick figures, I still draw them and people still ask for them ...

there's something very special about them ... When I started drawing other things than stick figures some people felt, to use the phraseology of one,  I'd left the shallow end of the creativity pool ... and I dunno if I am qualified to answer that; I draw other things than stick figures, because there are things that I want to express and can't in stick figures, and so if I don't evolve I don't get to speak, I don't get to say what I want to say ... but even when I do I try to carry through the simplicity and the humour.

but I always want to come back to them; they are where I started out and so they still resonate.

it wasn't the first time i'd ridden, but it was chuck that really taught me how to ride a bike off road or at least gave me the opportunity to do lots of riding off road - he had a yamaha enduro when we were all in 'junior high' ...

and then he got a trials bike that could climb small buildings, which was even cooler ... how cool to be able to pull up to a log and then just kinda pop over it on torque and a skid plate ...

enduro-ing freedom ...
