dready 'yoga girl on bike' - 24x24 - HD archival pigment print
                                                                 and logo image

i first met nicola at a party in london, about 11 or 12 years ago: I was visiting england for something to do with dready art that I don't recall any more ...

and that's was the start of a cool relationship in art and mutual affection ...

Moke, a 70's icon in its natural habitat

brigitte bardot driving one in 1968

tillies at beach suites, late 60's vibe

in the very early 70's the mini moke was the rental car of choice in cayman ... they were so cool in places like st tropez and st barths that brigitte bardot drove one ...

and then it wasn't here in cayman any more, outlawed ... but in other places it continued to be cool

and, now, it's back again, reborn as just the Moke ... and so we took one out, on behalf of Avis and went looking for the early 70's!

dready still doing the same stick

dready art 'Family 'Van'' - 36x12 - original commission on canvas

the name is a play on words because this family is from, ya know, vancouver ...

so what's cool about this, for me, is that am still getting to do the dready stick figures, I still draw them and people still ask for them ...

there's something very special about them ... When I started drawing other things than stick figures some people felt, to use the phraseology of one,  I'd left the shallow end of the creativity pool ... and I dunno if I am qualified to answer that; I draw other things than stick figures, because there are things that I want to express and can't in stick figures, and so if I don't evolve I don't get to speak, I don't get to say what I want to say ... but even when I do I try to carry through the simplicity and the humour.

but I always want to come back to them; they are where I started out and so they still resonate.

dready ... eduro-ing love

                             dready art 'enduro-ing love' -24x10 - image

it wasn't the first time i'd ridden, but it was chuck that really taught me how to ride a bike off road or at least gave me the opportunity to do lots of riding off road - he had a yamaha enduro when we were all in 'junior high' ...

and then he got a trials bike that could climb small buildings, which was even cooler ... how cool to be able to pull up to a log and then just kinda pop over it on torque and a skid plate ...

enduro-ing freedom ...

dready - all woman is warrior ...

dready art 'all woman is warrior' - 24x16 - image

i was drawing this character for someone and it wasn't working out for the purpose they wanted, but but but, for me, for me it was telling a story ...

the world I grew up in was one in which women were the glue; on the surface it may have seemed like a patriarchal society but when you walked into most of the homes, when you looked around yourself at the places where things got done you realised that it was women creating the space in which we were living, it was women who were (and are) the doers, the controllers of and the earners of the sustainable incomes - the woman who raised me was strong, formidable, driven, successful and certainly the typical of the society that I knew ... and I came to realise that, at least in terms of where and when I grew up, that it seemed that men were allowed a semblance of a power that they didn't actually have ... it was by no means a xanadu of perfect equality, no man, far from it because the man, the boy was still idolised ...

we're in the midst of a surge of female empowerment and so in drawing her and seeing that she seemed so strong and vibrant and feminine, i 'evolved' her ...

all woman is warrior ...

dready carnival time again

                             dready '3 steppaz' - 12x24 - image

last year at carnival time i drew the steppa on the far left, so much music and t'ing was going around in our world at the time that I felt the urge ...

then half way between then and now I drew the nex' steppa on the right: had seen this photo of frankie, his last post on instagram, and it was cool cool cool and i felt i had to create a character from the sway he had going on ...

and now, is carnival time again, eh ... jamaica carnival two weeks ago, batabanoo last week, caymas this week and i had in my mind this idea of more dancers together ... so see we here ...

dancing to the music of time kinda t'ing

and, at the same time I was at a talk at the National Gallery in a room with a piece of my art, Moko Jumbies - which is in the new biennial as well as having been purchased by the gallery and the government as a piece of culturally significant art - and thought you know, this dready, 3 Steppaz, may not seem like the same 'story' as Moko Jumbies (which was also drawn around carnival time) with the same emotions about dance and music and life of where we come from ... it doesn't carry on its surface the same symbolism that people see in Moko Jumbies, but it is the same story, just one told from a different perspective ...

dready s adjustment bureau

dready 'brochu bicycle' - 30x30 - remarque on canvas

Jaime asked me if I could personalise the bicycle girl for her ... I, of course, said yes man ... hot pink frame, turquoise background, flowers in the basket and and and her own dog

she had a vision and how nicely it worked ... this often happens when working with other creative people is that the actually end up enhancing you ...

dready staying human

                        dready-kimpton bookmarks in the seafire's suite 808

i was very very fortunate to be part of the whole kimpton seafire art package when they opened and even more fortunate to end up as the most represented artist in the hotel ...

in a pitch to kind of connect the parts of the circle of the art-to-the-hotel-to-the-guest i did some kimpton seafire dready bookmarks that became part of the VIP guest package; given as treats, left in certain spaces with books etc.

now, the same bookmarks have become part of seafire's curated suite 808 #stayhumanproject - it's actually a project across all kimptons but the idea is a suite with extra amenities that help define the experience - a book left for a reason ... a polaroid camera and a peg board for leaving behind an experience you want to share ... a guest book to pass on hints to the next guest ... name recognition throughout the hotel ... tokens that you can share with people you meet ...

anyhow the bookmarks make up part of that experience ...

as does the view! (and if you drag yourself away from the view and look hard at the night stand you'll see the dready bookmark.)

stay human

dready nudes on the wall

dready 'the red kimono' - 24x16 - limited edition HD archival pigment print

a friend of mine likes nudes and asked me for a pair to fit a spot on his wall -  I still think of nudes as an exercise in simplicity; what can you leave out of an image and still make them (in this case sensual) interesting, living.

when I do stick figure dreadys it is surprising just how much you can convey with simple lines ...

anyhow, so having drawn 'the green door' previously I was looking for an idea that matched it for him to mount on the wall ... and so 'the red kimono' ...

dready s 'the red kimono' and 'the green door' on the wall

dready 'nude in an orange chair' - 24x16 - limited edition HD archival pigment print

because this was the other nude that I had and that he didn't like as much - although i do ... i like it alot, perhaps it's the red stripe!

peace and
