dready the cayman cookout and the 3 amigos

dready art 'how to cook curry goat/the 3 amigos' - limited edition fund raising print
available in 3 sizes ... 16x5, 24x12, 36x18 inch (or by special order)

in the lead up to the cayman cookout at the ritz-carlton, grand cayman in 2018 the ritz asked if i would do a special dready of the three chefs, Jose Andres, Anthony Bourdain and Eric Ripert, hosts of the cookout ...

I'd done art for the ritz and for the cookout before - am very very fortunate that dready art hangs in the gallery at the Ritz and is for sale on merchandise in their gift shops ...

there was a hint that maybe i could do a beach scene for the project, but instead i imagined that here were the 3 visiting chef's showing a 'local' audience how to cook curry goat ... and in the corner of the art the goat shows up looking out and looking surprised that they're talking about him ...

The art was for sale, and for them, the Ritz, to give as PR gifts to media and VIPs and was signed by the three chefs ...

                         signed by the chefs.

and I had to show up for people to meet me ...

it turned out that that cayman cookout was to be the last time all three friends were together in one place ... and it turned out that the art meant something to them.

so, last month, when in an IGTV chat Eric Ripert and Jose Andres announced that June 25th, Anthony Bourdain's birthday, would be Bourdain day, and given the extraordinary times we're living in, we decided to break out the print and the PR around it for a cayman food bank charity ... and the NYT liked our idea ...

dready custom made

dready art 'John's Canoe' - on custom Orlebar Brown shorts

last year we did a spate of custom made shorts through luxury brand Orlebar Brown who have this very cool in website app for custom ordering shorts with your image on it, super easy ... it's not inexpensive but it is very cool and very custom.

I had just done a piece of a art for a house in jamaica - the art was called 'John's Canoe' - and we put it on a pair of shorts for john ...

John Canoe/Junkanoo is a festival, bigger in the Bahamas than most other places I know of, but it  was a big new years day festival in Jamaica when I was a yute ... made particularly memorable because of one man who used to get dressed up and stand at a crossroads we used to drive through in country to pass between my grand parents farm and other peoples - and we would stop and give him money ...

according to wikipedia "John Canoe was the European name given to an Akan warrior from Axim, Ghana. He was a chief of the Ahanta people in the early 18th century, who established a stronghold in the defunct Fort Fredericksburg and held it against European encroachment for 20 years. It fell finally in 1725 and his followers were transported as slaves to the Americas. He is commemorated in the Junkanoo festival held in the Caribbean each December."

for me it was just a play on words, because Jamaicans even have a kind of boat that other islanders refer to as the 'Jamaican Canoe' - long and narrow, high bowed and with an engine on the back and not a 'canoe' at all - and I was drawing a boat ...

dready a day at the beach

dready 'beach day' - 15'x9' mural - original remarque on 3m laminate

a company in cayman islands was redoing their 5th floor lobby into a staff meeting point, coffee station come lounge and asked me to do a mural for the back wall ...

you come out of the elevator and boom, there are two chairs a coffee table and a blank wall (except now the wall ain't be blank) ... and so the elements are spaced out in the art to accommodate the placement of chairs and stuff ...

At the end of last year I had created a kind of beach series - really starting with a dready called 'us in dreams' and then expanding to 'the beach walk' in which I added more and more beach elements to them culminating in using all those elements together for Avis and then following on by creating the surfer man called 'dude' ...

I repeated and used a bunch of all those elements here ... and added a few more like the cooler and the dog to create a cayman 'style' beach scene for the wall ...

life, they say, is a beach ...

big up ...

dready family life

dready 'round the pool' - 40x18 - original commission on canvas

this is 'one' of the longest running commission I've had on the books (notice the disclaimer because there are some that have yet to happen, deposits taken and still no photos) ... first of all it took me ages to come up with the idea until an acquaintance of us both suggested the garden as a backdrop, but even then it was the pool rather than the garden itself, which is full of lovely trees which I left out, around which I decided to create the focus ...

so, instead of starting in 5 months, this thing ran to 9 months or something and then, the family itself is very busy, children with needs and two big time jobs requiring time and energy ... and so their own edits and comments and thoughts also took ages to happen.

but in the end we all love the fun of it ... round the pool

the parents were both lovers of carnival and did/do road march every year, but also lovers of ascot (go figure) and so I depicted her doing an old soca move 'riding di donkey' while in her ascot outfit and his ascot top hat and him doing his 'signature' carnival dance move ... the kids as well are in their natural habitats ...

dready at the beach and other places

dready art 'pelican point' - 70x24 - original commission on canvas

somehow to describe the idea of a family's life without showing the family or their homes ...

they wanted something different out of a 'portrait' ... and one of their favourite thing about one house was the view and the spots in the garden from which they enjoyed that view.

the view was big and deep and expansive and where their two favourite chairs were in the shade wasn't a linear progression to the rest of the beach and garden and so I broke it down into 'vignettes' ... on purpose leaving out the top of tree and only indicating it in the shadow of its fronds in the top frame, because the chairs are, in real life, pretty much over where the image on the right is and set further back ...

this, for me, added a cool quirkiness to the art, an explanation that would have to be made, a story about why on earth had the artist left off the top of the tree in one frame but put it in in another.

their other house was near goodwood and they liked to go their for the 'revival' ... which allowed me to fill in the rest of the story ...

goodwood is one of those great days in the british summer calendar - things like the hay festival, glyndeborne, ladies day at ascot, glastonberry ... I say that like I 'do' the british summer, which I don't, but I have been fortunate enough to go glyndebourne and to goodwood, both of which i can recommend whole heartedly for the vibe, even if you're not into opera, or cars it's about the moments,;the day, the dusk, the places, the colour of the grass ...

dready, 'the suite life' ... motion graphics by Darren Bowyer

The Cayman Islands' national song goes a little like this

verdant isle, set
In blue Caribbean sea,
I'm coming, coming very soon
O beauteous isle, to thee.
Although I've wandered far,
My heart enshrines thee yet.
Homeland! Fair Cayman Isle
I cannot the forget ...

dready special

dready art 'breitmeyer's beach' - 50x40 - original remarque on canvas

taking the idea of the south sound cottage and changing little things to make it your own has been a very popular thing ...

and for one particular family they wanted a few 'liccle' adjustments - i absolutely love the magenta sky that she chose.

dready version deux

dready art 'yoga girl 2+2' - 20x20 - limited edition HD archival pigment print

I was actually doing a little custom image for something for max and thinking about a potential linkup with a cycling company at the same time and this popped out of the whole moment ...

a reimagining of the yoga girl on bike with a bit of uk lifestyle thrown in ...

the world is in a sudden moment of possible change, a shift in perceptions as the northern summer arrives and people jump on their bikes as part of the whole process of moving around while social distancing ...

it may not hold, it may not last long, but it is a moment of possibility.

dready porsche cayman GT3 racing

dready art 'race you to the cayman islands' - original commission image

the porsche cayman series is, naturally I guess, sponsored by the Cayman Islands and I was asked, given the fact that during the covid/coronavirus pandemic there is no racing, to draw some images and create some gifs that could be used in lieu of photography and racing, in social media ...

i was to do art for porche GB racing and for aston martin racing ... i drove my first porsche a 911sc twin turbo, when I was in my 20's, a friend in car sales had brought it for us to drive ... Wow, it was an experience in the subtle application of power and speed ...

I've never driven a cayman, but i hear that the driving experience is lovely.

dready aston martin racing

dready art 'when darren turner dreams' - 24x16 - original commission image

the world of racing, along with most everything else came to an end in february and march and so without photos, without action, without racing, I was asked to create some art for several of the GT3 class racing teams,

the first was for one of Aston Martin Racing's drivers ... a series of drawings and a motion graphics video ... dreaming of a post lockdown trip ...

the noise, the engine noise that an Aston Martin makes is a very sexy thing, very ... I've always been in deep like with a 1970's series III vantage in blue and the engine growl that it has  ...

and so hey, I drew a version of this with me (ish) in it ... not the 1970's but, ya know, why not ...

dready painting your flag

dready art 'painting your flag' - 26x26 - original remarque on canvas

I was asked to do a dready as a gift for someone's daughter, who was identifying as queer, based on the idea 'painting the flag' ...

these are actually the colours of the bisexual flag, but I chose simply to show two women, as drawing a man into the idea may have had other connotations ... and besides there's a really cool tenderness to the touch of the two characters and i like that ...

dready - meet my wilson

dready 'wilson's other roles, hamlet' - commissioned image

i'd been listening to some 'gramcasts', about change, during our mandatory isolation - we'd been in Jamaica when the coronavirus started to run rampant in europe and spread to the americas, so when we came home we had to go into mandatory isolation ...

anyhow, the man behind the gramcasts had also started an initiative #meetmywilson to let people who felt isolated and not just in isolation know that they were not alone and had asked me if i would participate ..

the idea of a wilson comes from the tom hanks movie 'cast away' in which he created a friend, wilson, out of a volleyball, to keep him company in his alone-ness and despair ...

and i thought ... what if i imagined wilson as an actor, a character rather than an object ...

you know, when david asked me if i had done a 'wilson', yet, i said no, i hadn't and i said that although i was in isolation i was not isolated and i didn't want to be false about it ... but he asked that i do it not as an indication of my own feelings during the lockdown but to let people, who are anxious and lonely, know that they were being thought about.

dready and captain kirk

dready 'that ball's gone where no ball has gone before' - 36x13 - original commission on canvas

because I don't really play golf I was racking my brain to know where the twist in this dready might come from and so looking up some phrases on the internet, I came across - 'a captain kirk' ... a ball that has gone where no ball has gone before.

and then the fun started.

now lemme just say here that I never really liked star trek that much, certainly never liked the in between years with pickard and whomever else and thought the movies were all terrible - forgive me please all trekkies out there, give a man some space to have his foibles - that is until the chris pine star treks ... i like the chris pine star treks

BUT that said who doesn't love the public personas of william shatner and george takai ... and the cinema persona of Mr Spock, whomever plays him ...

dready and kpmg

mural on the 4th floor was the first installation of what essentially was a year of work on commissioned drawings for KPMG.

            points of view

           subjects that matter ...

all three small board rooms have different art

the boardrooms when originally measured had showed the fire alarms in completely different positions - and as you see them now they were moved again after the installation to make room for the art ... but when the walls were finished we realised that what we envisioned of three separate 40" pieces of art weren't going to fit because what the plans had show wasn't what was actually on the wall ... and so we adapted ...

and then they moved the fire alarms, but still not to where they were in the drawings (at the top of the wall)

           on different themes ...

the main boardroom has an history timeline of kpmg international

this was a very cool piece including the history of the company, in cayman, in a timeline and representations of all the partners that ever were ... progressions ...

        and the main lobby art

the main lobby art is a 'conceptual' piece based on the corporate ethos and origin statements as told to me by the managing partner ... you can see all the art separately and in more detail further down in the blog.

dready deck house life

dready art 'deck house life' - 72x24 - original commission on canvas

this group of houses were inspired by the 'cottages' and boat houses north of toronto, because the original developer was canadian ... people go to the lakes, north of the city, pretty much every weekend, sun, rain or snow, or all of the above, to; muskoka, huntsville, lakefield, barrie, parry sound, tiny beaches ...

they call it 'cottage country'

I've heard someone call their 14,000 sq foot house by the lake the 'cottage' ...

some areas have big cottages, some small, some are carefully planned ... Georgian Bay for example is closely guarded from mega mansions, planning allows only one 'kitchen' and house/cabin/cottage sizes are limited as are toilets and other structures ...

it's pretty lovely, it's not british columbia dramatic lovely, but it is ontario lovely; gently rolling landscapes, farmsteads and lotsa lotsa lakes.

i was a small boy when I first went to 'cottage country'; a business associate of my grandfather's, a man to whom he sold pimento/allspice I think, had invited us to canada and to his cottage, and we went - in my memory it was called 'loon lake', which exists, but I wouldn't swear that was true - the water was cold, colder than this little jamaican yute had ever experienced - I watched a loon dive in chasing fish ...

and four months later, now, i come back to add something, because an old friend of the family sent a pic of us: her, her brother, my sister and me sitting in some seriously mid century modern room, and my sister said that that was us all visiting toronto on our way to the cottage on the 'loon lake' ... i had no recollection of that moment in the photo, god knows I should have remembered the lamp ... and the Fernand Leger painting behind us on the wall ...

evoluting dready

dready art 'ferrari daytona - red' - 49x16 - image

evoluting is a word that i coined a few years ago - can't say I invented it, but i used it, having never seen it before - i needed it because evolution seems to me to be a process which 'happens', something evolves due to stimuli; but what I wanted was an evolution that was actively happening to someone, they weren't evolving but someone/something was evolving them forcibly, they were actively being evolved ... and so, evoluting dready (and because it was a better word than 'changing'.)

so below us somewhere is a dready that is called 'miami vice-ish' ... same car different story ...

dready leg over ...

dready art 'leg over' - 36x15 - limited edition HD archival pigment print

i found myself this week thinking about cricket ... i was at lunch with two men who had been to school together, and the chat turned to cricket somewhere along the line ...

i had been, but i never said so, on the first 11 at school ...

but i was an interested but uncommitted yute (and not just with sports either!) ...

i loved sports, enjoyed them, played them well, was strong, fast, agile - but but but that serious pursuit of excellence required by coaches and masters and parentals however was, for my constantly distracted self, unattainable ...

if only you'd apply yourself ...

i found my head running back to the last day i played on the first 11 ... a late arrival, a dishevelled self, a lackadaisical swing at a well bowled ball, lazy fielding for a few overs ...

i wasn't invited back ...
