dready leg over ...

dready art 'leg over' - 36x15 - limited edition HD archival pigment print

i found myself this week thinking about cricket ... i was at lunch with two men who had been to school together, and the chat turned to cricket somewhere along the line ...

i had been, but i never said so, on the first 11 at school ...

but i was an interested but uncommitted yute (and not just with sports either!) ...

i loved sports, enjoyed them, played them well, was strong, fast, agile - but but but that serious pursuit of excellence required by coaches and masters and parentals however was, for my constantly distracted self, unattainable ...

if only you'd apply yourself ...

i found my head running back to the last day i played on the first 11 ... a late arrival, a dishevelled self, a lackadaisical swing at a well bowled ball, lazy fielding for a few overs ...

i wasn't invited back ...

dready on walls

dready on the wall at round Hill Hotel Montego Bay

through the years we've had the good good fortune of putting dready on some pretty cool walls - and they bring people some joy and smiles and that, that's pretty cool for me ...

dready flip flops to the world

dready flip flops on arthur's seat in edinburgh 2019 - photo by MA

i first went to edinburgh when I was about 11, I went there on holiday to scotland with a friend whose father worked at holyrood palace, and who lived across the road ... we walked up arthur's seat ...

even with so much time past it still stuck in my mind, the black rocks, the green, the cold ...

i never went back to britain for 20 years, never went back to scotland for 35 but fell instantly in like with it the minute i went back.

max climbed arthurs seat last year (not in his flip flops! although, in them, anything is possible) and took this photo ...

dready ... food and love

dready art's 'dinner at le bernardin' - 40x17 - original commission on canvas

I first met george through some art i'd done for cayman cookout 2018 (featured below somewhere on the blog) with the 3 hosting chefs: Anthony Bourdain, Eric Ripert and Jose Andres - and we started chatting.

and george introduced me to john, last year, at a dinner for the cookout, the night before they all jetted off from cayman to go to a lunch at strawberry hill hotel in Jamaica, with eric ripert, and come back.

to make a short story just a little longer, the whole group, who had been on that strawberry hill trip, did a six month anniversary dinner at le bernardin in new york with eric ripert again ...

and so in time for the cayman cookout this year john asked if i would do a dready to celebrate the group and it would hang in the ritz-carlton grand cayman and it would be a surprise for the group ...

what a nice surprise ... i went to dinner with them all again last night and how excited they were about being surprised by themselves in art ...

dready chelsea truck company

dready 'the chelsea truck company' - 30x30 - original commission remarque on canvas

so I took the original 'south coast drive' idea and converted it to a land rover pick-up as a remarque ...

the remarques offer a mid point in the dready pantheon ... because I don't have to dream up a new idea and because I then also only do half the work of drawing, it makes life simpler for me and it makes a personalized dready easier for the client ...

may the road you travel be smooth ...

dready a family with dogs

dready art '4 dogs and a fire hydrant' - 37x17 - original commission on canvas

this was a gift from a husband to a wife ... he wanted me to draw a dready of their house and her and her dogs ...

and then there was space for me to add the whole family and her mother and he asked me to do that as well.

still another one about family eh ...

fambly ...

dready art - a family that plays together

dready 'team brooks steps up' - 40x15 - original on canvas

when I met the family they wanted me to know that they were a team, that they looked after each other ... and it showed ...

family is a work-pleasure scenario - and that's especially evident at this time of year - being a family does takes work, it's not easy like being friends ... although friendships can be deep and heartwarming and even supportive in the end (in most peoples lives) family supports, finances, nurtures, comforts, defends and often does it (in both directions from parents to kids and kids to parents) without asking for anything but love in return ...

if you don't call your mum for a month she'll still be your mum; if you don't call your close close friends for a month that relationship, as a true friendship, is essentially over.

there s a warm and fuzzy part of my close family that refers to itself as the 'mafia' and as fambly ... they are supportive and caring of each other and the interaction seems to go two ways; love and care flows in both directions - and that's cool. It's not nice when one sees the care flowing from parents to kids with the kids taking it all in with little given in return, absorbing the self and none of the sacrifice that it takes to be a family.

This family wanted to express a particularly bonding moment in their lives and I liked it ...
